Contextale app and browser extension
Terms of Service
The short version
Use Contextale as intended and it's yours to use. What you make and upload stays yours; we store it only to sync it back to you. Pro is a subscription sold through the app stores, it renews until you cancel, and refunds go through the store you bought from.
One thing worth knowing before it happens: cloud storage for book files is part of Pro. If your subscription ends, we keep those files for 30 days, write to you twice, and then delete the copies on our servers. Your library, your reading positions and every book already downloaded to a device are not touched.
Who we are, and what you're agreeing to
Contextale ("we", "us") is a language-learning app and browser extension operated by Katrin (Kalina) Krasner, Tel Aviv, Israel. The "Service" means the mobile app (iOS, Android), the browser extension, and contextale.com.
By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, don't use it. How we handle your data is a separate document, the Privacy Policy, and it's part of this agreement.
Who can use it
You must be at least 13 years old, or 16 if you're in the EEA or the UK. If you use the Service for an organization, you confirm you're authorized to accept these Terms for it.
Your account
You're responsible for your account and for keeping your sign-in secure. Guest mode works without an account, and without sync. Tell us at contextale@gmail.com if you think someone else has got into your account.
You can delete your account at any time, in the app or at the account deletion page. That erases your synced data from our servers, uploaded books included; what's on your device stays yours.
Free and Pro
Free includes the core experience: reading, tap-to-translate, saved vocabulary, spaced-repetition study, local dictionaries, a monthly allowance of AI reference cards, up to 3 imported books, and sync of your words, notes and library list across your devices. Book files stay on the device you imported them on.
Pro unlocks premium translators (DeepL, Yandex), the full AI card allowance, unlimited imported books, cloud storage for book files (100 MB per account, so a book imported on one device can be opened on another), extended statistics, and Anki export.
We may change what each plan includes. If a change takes something away from a plan you're currently paying for, we'll tell you before it applies to you.
Subscriptions, billing, renewal
- Pro is a subscription: $6.99 / month or $59.99 / year (local prices vary), with a 3-day free trial on the first purchase
- Subscriptions are sold only through the app stores. Payment is charged to your Apple ID or Google Play account. There's no billing on the website, and we never ask for card details ourselves
- Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. Cancel any time in your App Store or Google Play settings; access runs to the end of the period you've paid for. Deleting the app doesn't cancel a subscription
- Refunds are handled by the store you bought through, under its policies. We can't issue one for a store purchase ourselves, but write to us and we'll help you get to the right place
- We may change prices. A change never affects a period you've already paid for, and the store asks you to confirm before renewing at a higher price
What happens to cloud-stored books when Pro ends
Storing book files on our servers is part of Pro. When a subscription ends, uploads stop immediately and the files are kept for 30 more days. We e-mail you twice in that window, about a week after it ended and again about a week before the date, each time saying what will be removed and when. After that we delete the copies on our servers.
We delete the files, not your library: titles, authors, reading positions, words and notes stay, and a book already downloaded to a device stays on that device and keeps working. Renewing Pro before the date stops the deletion. A subscription still in payment retry with Apple or Google is not treated as ended: a card that failed is not a cancelled subscription.
To keep a file without Pro, open that book once on the device you want it on, or keep your own copy. It's your file.
Translation and AI usage
Premium translation and AI reference cards run through our servers against provider quotas. We apply monthly allowances to keep the Service sustainable, and show you what you've used. Automated bulk use may be rate-limited or suspended.
Translations and cards are machine-generated. They're a study aid, not a professional translation.
Your content
You keep ownership of everything you create or upload: vocabulary, notes, snippets, books.
You grant us a limited licence to store and process your content only to provide the Service, and for nothing else. We don't publish it, index it, share it between accounts, or train anything on it.
You confirm you have the right to upload and store any book or text you add. Uploaded files are private to your account: there's no sharing feature and no public library.
Copyright complaints
If you believe something stored through the Service infringes your copyright, write to contextale@gmail.com with: what work is infringed, where it is (as precisely as you can), your contact details, and a statement that you're the rights holder or authorized to act for them.
We remove infringing material when a complaint checks out, tell the account holder what was removed, and terminate accounts that infringe repeatedly. Because uploaded files are private to a single account and never shared or indexed, a complaint will usually need to identify the account rather than a public address.
Third-party content and sites
The Service loads external websites in an embedded browser, and the extension works on pages you visit. That content belongs to its owners and is governed by their terms. We don't control it, endorse it, or take responsibility for it, and we don't copy or redistribute it.
Acceptable use
Don't break the law; don't infringe anyone's rights; don't upload content you have no rights to; don't resell or redistribute the Service; don't reverse-engineer it except where the law allows; and don't interfere with how it runs for other people.
Our intellectual property
The Contextale app, extension, name, logo and design are ours. These Terms don't give you rights to our trademarks or code beyond using the Service as intended.
Apple and Google
These Terms are between you and us, not between you and Apple or Google.
For the iOS app: Apple isn't responsible for the app or its content, has no obligation to provide support for it, and isn't responsible for any claim that the app infringes someone's rights or fails to meet a legal requirement. If the app doesn't work as it should, you can tell Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm you're not in a country subject to a US embargo or listed as a prohibited party.
For Android, the equivalent applies to Google under the Google Play terms.
Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is". Translations and AI cards are machine-generated and may be wrong, so don't rely on them for anything that matters. We don't promise the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Sync is a convenience, not a backup service. Keep your own copy of anything you can't afford to lose. The app's JSON export exists for exactly that.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for loss of data. Our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing here takes away rights you have as a consumer under the law of your country, which can't be excluded by an agreement, including, in the EEA and the UK, your statutory rights about faulty digital content and your right to withdraw from a purchase.
Termination
You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you break these Terms or if the law requires it. If we terminate your account and you've paid for a period you can't use, ask the store for a refund of the unused part and we'll support the request.
On account deletion, your synced data is erased as described in the Privacy Policy.
Changes to these Terms
Changes appear on this page with a new date at the top. If a change is material and you have an account, we'll tell you in the app or by e-mail before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the new version.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Israel, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts of Tel Aviv have jurisdiction. If you're a consumer in the EEA or the UK, this doesn't deprive you of the protection of your local law or of the right to bring a claim where you live.
